Have you ever gone on a digital diet?
In Week 4 of the The Artist Way, Julia Cameron assigns the dreaded reading deprivation exercise. For one week, you stop reading. No exceptions. No reading of any kind for an entire 7 days.
When Navé and I began our collaboration, we found we had both come to the same conclusion…reading is the least of it. Yes, for some reading remains a primary distraction but for many more it’s television, email, computer games etc. These days we can add Facebook and Twitter to the list of possible distractions.
If you’re serious about your creative work, I would encourage you to take a look at the ways you distract and numb yourself. In my experience everyone has a particular favorite and most of us know exactly what that is.
If you haven’t done this exercise, I would encourage you to give it a try.. Pick one thing you use to divert your attention, and eliminate it for one week. Then notice what happens.
